The Venkanna Babu
Temple, also known as Chaldikudu Venkanna Temple or Meesala
Venkanna Temple, is one of the most famous shrines in Yanam, Puducherry.
Built in the 15th century by the kings of Rajamahendravaram (Rajahmundry),
the temple is renowned for its unique idol of Lord Venkateswara with large
mustaches, resembling the Lord Sathyanarayana Swamy of Annavaram. Ancient
sculptures from that era still adorn the temple, reflecting its rich heritage.
Historical Significance
- During the pre‑independence era,
Yanam was under French rule.
- The temple became infamous as a hub
for child marriages, since the British‑implemented Sarada Act
(prevention of child marriages) did not apply in French territories.
- Thousands of marriages were performed
daily, and Yanam earned the name “Kalyana Puram.”
- Social reformer Raja Ram Mohan
Roy’s efforts eventually curbed child marriages across India, but the
temple’s history remains a reminder of those times.
