Introduction
In
the historic city of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, lies the revered Sri
Gadkalika Shakti Peeth, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in India. This temple
is dedicated to Goddess Avanti, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati, and
holds immense spiritual significance as the site where Devi Sati’s lower lip
fell. Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Lambkarna, making the temple a

Legends and Mythological
Significance
The
temple’s origin is rooted in the story of Daksha Yagna:
- When Goddess Sati was insulted by her
father Daksha, she immolated herself in the sacred fire.
- Lord Shiva, enraged, performed the Tandava
to destroy the universe.
- To prevent cosmic destruction, Lord
Vishnu cut Sati’s body into 51 parts with his Sudarshan Chakra.
- Each part fell at different places,
forming the Shakti Peethas.
- At Ujjain, her lower lip fell,
sanctifying the site as Sri Gadkalika Shakti Peeth, where she is
worshipped as Maa Avantika.
