The Shakteeswara Swamy
Temple at Yanamadurru in West Godavari district is a rare and sacred
shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva and his family. This temple is unique in India,
as Lord Shiva manifests here in Sirsa Asana (headstand yoga posture),
with Goddess Parvati beside him holding infant Subramanya.
During excavations,
locals unearthed a 6‑foot snake idol, believed to represent Lord
Subramanya. The temple priest installed it inside the sanctum, adding to the
temple’s spiritual aura.
Legends & History
According
to legend, demon Shambasura troubled sages after receiving a boon from
Lord Shiva. Only Yama Dharma Raja could defeat him, but Yama lost in battle.
Seeking strength, Yama performed penance to Lord Shiva, who remained in Sirsa
Asana posture. Goddess Parvati granted Yama additional powers, enabling him to
kill the demon.
On
Yama’s request, Lord Shiva manifested here with Parvati and Subramanya. As
Shiva appeared with Shakti, the temple became known as Shakteeswara Swamy
Temple. The name Yanamadurru itself is derived from Yama Puri.
