Legends &
Significance
- Narasimha Avatar Vision:
When Hiranyakashipu became arrogant with his boons, the devas prayed to
Vishnu. Before taking the Narasimha avatar, Vishnu revealed his form at
Thirukoshtiyur in three postures – standing, sitting, and reclining.
Since the devas received his vision after hardship (Thirukkai), the
place came to be known as Thirukoshtiyur.
- Ramanuja’s Preaching:
The temple is historically significant as Ramanuja preached the sacred
Ashtakshara mantra “Om Namo Narayanaya” to all, regardless of caste or
varna, symbolizing spiritual equality.
