Temple – Thirumayam
Located in Thirumayam,
Pudukottai district, Tamil Nadu, the Sri Sathyamurthi Perumal Temple
is one of the 108 Divyadesam temples of Lord Vishnu. The deity here, Sathyamurthi
Perumal, is a swayambhu incarnation of Vishnu, standing 7 feet tall,
holding the Chakra and Shanku, and surrounded by devas, rishis, asuras,
Chitragupta, Dharmaraja, and Brahma.
Legends &
Significance
- Adishesha’s Penance:
Adishesha sought to transform his nature from tamasic to satvik.
Performing penance here, Vishnu appeared as Hayagriva and granted
him a boon.
- Chandra’s Devotion:
The Moon God performed penance here, and Vishnu appeared as Vamana.
- Sage Satya’s Penance:
A sage named Satya worshipped here, and Vishnu granted him salvation along
with King Pururava. Vishnu appeared as a boar, leading to the construction
of this temple.

The reclining image of Perumal here is believed to be larger than the
Ranganatha idol at Srirangam, making it the biggest reclining Vishnu
idol in India.
