Bathukamma Festival 2025: Telangana’s Floral Celebration of Life and Devotion

Dates: September 21 – September 29, 2025
Region: Telangana, India
Occasion: Celebrated during Sharad Navratri, from Bhadrapada Amavasya to Durga Ashtami

What Is Bathukamma?

Bathukamma is a vibrant floral festival celebrated by the women of Telangana to honor Goddess Gowri (Parvati). It’s a thanksgiving ritual for a bountiful harvest and a celebration of feminine energy, nature, and community.

Rituals and Traditions

Women create a conical arrangement of seasonal flowers in seven concentric layers, placed in a clay pot. The top is adorned with a pumpkin flower and turmeric, symbolizing prosperity and purity.

Throughout the nine days:

  • Homes are cleaned and purified with cow dung.
  • Floral rangolis and sacred placements decorate the entrances.
  • Women gather to sing traditional songs and dance around the Bathukammas.
  • On the final day, the Bathukammas are set afloat in rivers or lakes after worship.
  • Local fairs (Jataras) and folk performances add to the festive spirit.
