According to the Skanda
Purana and Vishnu Rahasya, Lord Brahma explained to Narada
the immense spiritual merit of observing Chaturmasya, the four-month
period when Lord Vishnu enters Yoga Nidra in the Ksheer Sagar.
Cosmic Significance
- During Chaturmasya, all rivers,
oceans, and water bodies are sanctified, as Lord Vishnu’s divine
presence permeates them.
- Hence, daily holy baths in
rivers are highly meritorious, believed to wash away sins and purify the
soul.
Austerities & Rituals
- Tarpan
(ancestral offerings) must be performed after the morning bath.
- Food grain donation
is considered especially auspicious.
- Avoid black clothing,
as it is linked with tamasic energy.
- Combing hair and shaving
are discouraged to promote simplicity and detachment.
- Celibacy (Brahmacharya)
is highly recommended—those who observe it are said to be free from sorrow
for life.
Karka Sankranti
Observance
- On Karka Sankranti, when the
Sun enters Cancer and Dakshinayana begins:
- Worship Lord Vishnu with black
plums (jamun).
- Chant the Vishnu Sahasranama
and offer arghya to the Sun.
- Avoid starting new ventures, but
engage in charity and fasting.
Spiritual Rewards
- Observing Chaturmasya with devotion destroys
sins of a hundred births.
- Pilgrimages and river baths during
this time bestow virtues beyond description.
- All deities are believed to reside
within Lord Vishnu during these months, making every act of devotion
especially potent.
