Thirunakkara Arattu Festival 2026 – Elephants, Kathakali & Traditions at Kottayam Mahadeva Temple
The Thirunakkara
Arattu Utsavam is one of Kerala’s most vibrant temple festivals, celebrated
annually at the Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple in Kottayam district. This
ten-day festival begins on the first day of the Malayalam month of Meenam
(March–April) and concludes with the ceremonial Arattu (holy bathing)
of Lord Mahadeva. In 2026, the festival will culminate on 24 March.
Festival Highlights
- Arattu Procession:
The grand procession features nine caparisoned elephants, adorned
with golden nettipattam (headgear), decorative umbrellas, and ornaments.
Accompanied by drummers, dancers, and devotees, the elephants lead the
deity to the temple tank for the ritual bath.
- Cultural Performances:
- Mayilattom (Peacock Dance)
and Velakali, traditional martial dances, captivate audiences with
their energy.
- Kathakali
performances on the third and fourth nights bring classical storytelling
to life, lasting through the night.
- Community Spirit:
The temple courtyard transforms into a hub of cultural pride, with
thousands of devotees and visitors participating.
Temple History and
Legends
- The temple was built by the Thekkumkoor
kings. One king, unable to travel to Vadakkumnathan Temple due to old
age, prayed for Lord Shiva’s presence in Kottayam.
- Following a divine dream, a Brahmin
priest discovered a Shiva Linga buried at the current site. The
king constructed the temple to enshrine it.
- Today, the temple also houses idols
of Lord Subramanya, Lord Ganesa, Goddess (Panchaloha idol), and Lord
Ayyappa.
- The temple stands on Thirunakkara
Hill (Nakkara Kunnu), with traditional Kerala-style architecture and
intricate carvings.
Significance
- The festival is a blend of
devotion and cultural heritage, attracting nearly 1,500
participants annually.
- It showcases Kerala’s rich traditions
through elephant parades, percussion music, dance, and drama.
- The Arattu symbolizes purification
and renewal, reinforcing the bond between deity and devotees.
