Shivkhodi Cave Jammu: Sacred Abode of Lord Shiva Near Vaishno Devi
When pilgrims journey to
Jammu and Kashmir, Mata Vaishno Devi often takes center stage. Yet, just a
short distance away lies another sacred destination—Shivkhodi, a
mystical cave dedicated to Lord Shiva. Known as the “Cave of the Gods”,
this site offers a profound spiritual experience steeped in legend, natural
wonder, and divine ambiance.

Khodi translates to “cave” in local dialect.

Believed to resemble Lord Shiva’s damru (drum).

Shiva resides.
The Legend of Bhasmasura
According to local
folklore, the demon Bhasmasura sought to overpower Lord Shiva. To
protect himself, Mahadev created this cave. A fierce battle ensued, ending only
when Lord Vishnu, disguised as Mohini, tricked and defeated the demon.
The carvings inside Shivkhodi are said to depict this legendary confrontation,
making the cave a living testament to divine intervention.
Natural Wonders Within
- Self-formed Shivalinga:
Created by limewater dripping from the cave ceiling, symbolizing eternal
anointment.
- Celestial Carvings:
Depictions of Sheshnag, Lord Ganesha, and Kartikeya adorn the walls,
giving the impression of an entire divine realm encapsulated within.
- Mystical Passages:
Narrow routes inside the cave are believed to connect directly to the Amarnath
Cave, though they are sealed for safety.
Visiting Shivkhodi

70–80 km from Katra (Vaishno Devi).
- Transport:
Accessible by taxi or bus after completing the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage.
- Best Time: Year-round visits are common, but Mahashivratri offers a particularly vibrant and devotional atmosphere.
