Bhadrakali Jayanti 2026: Date, Rituals, Significance & Astrological Importance
Bhadrakali Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Goddess Bhadrakali, a fierce yet protective form of Goddess Shakti. This sacred festival is observed on Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Jyeshta, corresponding to May-June in the Gregorian calendar. The day is deeply significant for devotees seeking the blessings of the Goddess to overcome obstacles and usher in positivity.
Legend and Significance
Hindu mythology narrates
that Bhadrakali was born from Lord Shiva’s hair when he was overcome
with rage upon hearing about Devi Sati’s demise. Her emergence signified
the destruction of evil forces, making Bhadrakali a powerful guardian of
righteousness. This day is celebrated across India with devotion, particularly
by Aryan Saraswat Brahmins, and holds special importance in states like Haryana,
Himachal Pradesh, and Kashmir.
Interestingly, Bhadrakali
Jayanti is also recognized as Apara Ekadashi in certain parts of India,
while in Orissa, it is known as Jalakrida Ekadashi. Devotees
believe that worshipping Goddess Bhadrakali on this day brings prosperity,
removes obstacles, and resolves astrological challenges, including Grah
Dosha.
Rituals and Worship
On this auspicious day,
devotees begin their prayers by bathing early in the morning and wearing
black or blue attire, believed to be favorable to the Goddess. Worship
at home includes:
Panchamrita Abhishek
– The idol of Mata Bhadrakali is bathed in water, milk, sugar, honey,
and ghee.
Sacred Offerings – Devotees dress the idol beautifully and offer coconut
water as a symbol of purity and devotion.
Chandan Puja and Bilva Puja – These prayers invoke the Goddess’s
blessings.
Recitation of Devi Mantras – At noon, special chants are performed to
seek divine protection.
Temple Visits – In the evening, devotees visit Goddess Kali temples,
participating in pujas and rituals conducted for the occasion.
Astrological and
Spiritual Importance
The Nilmat Purana
(also known as Vitasta Mahatmya) extols the greatness of Bhadrakali
Jayanti, emphasizing that worshipping the Goddess can remove life’s barriers.
Some beliefs suggest that devotees can fulfill eleven desires on this
day as it falls on Krishna Paksha Ekadashi. If the festival coincides
with Tuesday and Revati Nakshatra, its auspiciousness multiplies. When
celebrated during Kumbh Mela, it holds even greater spiritual
importance.
