The Tirupati Ganga
Jatara is one of the most vibrant folk festivals of Andhra Pradesh,
celebrated annually at the Tataiahgunta Gangamma Temple, located on the
eastern side of Tirupati city. Goddess Gangamma, revered as the Grama
Devata (village deity) of Tirupati, is worshipped with immense devotion
during this grand celebration. She is also considered the sister of Lord
Venkateswara Swamy of Tirumala.
Festival Significance
The Jatara symbolizes the
triumph of good over evil and the protective power of the goddess. It is deeply
rooted in local traditions and community participation, making it one of the
most important folk festivals in the region.
The festivities begin
with the Chatimpu (formal announcement) at midnight, marking the start
of the celebrations. Each day of the Jatara is associated with a unique vesham
(disguise or form) of the goddess, reflecting her different manifestations.
