About Balarama Jayanti

Balarama Jayanti is celebrated across India as the birth anniversary of Lord Balarama, revered as the elder brother of Lord Krishna. Known for his immense strength and devotion, Lord Balarama is considered an incarnation of Adi Shesha, the divine serpent on whom Lord Vishnu rests.

The festival is observed on different dates across regions:

  • Shravan Purnima in many parts of India
  • Akshaya Tritiya in certain regions
  • Vaisakh month (April–May) in Northern states, where it is called Hal Shashti or Lalahi Chhath
  • In Braj region, it is known as Baladeva Chhath
  • In Gujarat, it is celebrated as Randhan Chhath

Rituals of Balarama Jayanti Vrat

  • Devotees wake up early, bathe, and decorate their home temples with flowers and leaves.
  • Fasting is observed until noon, with complete abstinence from food.
  • Idols of Krishna and Balarama are given a holy bath with Panchamritam (milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar).
  • Special bhog is prepared and offered to the deities, later shared as prasad.
