Shravan Masam 2026 – Holiest Month of Devotion, Rituals, and Festivals
Shravan,
the fifth month in the traditional Hindu calendar, is considered the holiest
and most auspicious time of the year. Known as Avni in
Tamil, it begins when the Sun enters the Leo zodiac sign, ushering
in a season filled with devotion, rain-kissed breezes, and vibrant festivals.
Mythological Significance
According to the Samudra
Manthan legend, the dreaded Halahal poison emerged during
the churning of the ocean and was consumed by Lord Shiva to
protect all beings. To reduce its toxicity, the Devas offered Gangajal,
leading to Shiva's name as Neelkanth. Hence, during Shravan,
offering Gangajal on the Shiva Linga is believed to fulfill
all wishes and cleanse karmic burdens.
