Utpanna Ekadashi 2025 – Rituals, Legends & Spiritual Significance of Ekadashi Mata’s Birth

Utpanna Ekadashi, also known as Uttpatti Ekadashi, is observed on the 11th day (Ekadashi Tithi) of the Krishna Paksha in the Margashirsha month of the Hindu calendar. In 2025, it falls on Saturday, November 15.

This sacred day marks the origin of Ekadashi Mata and celebrates Lord Vishnu’s victory over the demon Murasura. It is considered the ideal starting point for devotees who wish to begin observing the Ekadashi Vrata cycle.

Legend

According to the Bhavishyottara Purana, when the demon Murasura tried to attack Lord Vishnu during his yogic rest, a divine feminine energy emerged from Vishnu’s body and defeated the demon. This energy was named Ekadashi Mata, and Vishnu declared that those who observe fast on this day would be freed from all sins and attain Vaikuntha after death.

Rituals and Observances

  • Fasting begins at sunrise on Ekadashi and ends after sunrise on Dwadashi.
  • Some devotees begin the vrat from Dashami evening with a single Saatvik meal.
  • Rice, pulses, and grains are strictly avoided.
  • Devotees wake up before sunrise and perform Brahma Muhurat puja to Lord Krishna, Vishnu, and Ekadashi Mata.
