Introduction
The town of Kumbakonam (Thirukkudanthai) in Tamil Nadu is a renowned center of both Vaishnavaite and Saivite traditions. With its rich temple heritage dating back to the Sangam and Chola periods, it has long been celebrated as a hub of Hindu cultural learning. Among its many shrines, the Sri Sarangapani Temple stands out as one of the most important Srivaishnavaite temples, revered alongside Srirangam, Tirupati, Kanchipuram, and Thirumaliruncholai.
Location
- Situated about 85 km east of
Srirangam, on the southern bank of the sacred Kaveri River.
- The temple is a prominent landmark in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu.
Sthalapuranam (Temple
Legend)
- Sage Brighu, in his quest to
test Lord Narayana’s patience, kicked the Lord’s chest. Angered, Goddess
Mahalakshmi left Vaikunta.
- Vishnu followed her to earth,
residing underground as Patala Srinivasa until her anger subsided.
- Brighu was reborn as Hemarishi,
who prayed for Mahalakshmi to be born as his daughter. She emerged from
the Potramarai tank as Kamalavalli.
- Lord Vishnu descended from Vaikunta
in a chariot drawn by horses and elephants, hence the sanctum of Sri
Aravamudhan (ever sweet nectar) is shaped like a chariot.
- The Lord arrived under the Vaidheeka Vimana on Makara Sankranthi day to wed Kamalavalli.
Unique Features
- Two Entrances:
Dakshinayana and Utharayana entrances to the sanctum.
- Vimana:
Known as Vaidheeka Vimana, paired with Pranavakruthi Vimana.
- Temple Pond:
Hemavalli Pushkarani.
The Half-Arisen Posture
- When Thirumazhisai Alwar
visited, he asked the Lord if he was tired after his avatars. The Lord
began to rise to greet him.
- Moved by this kindness, the Alwar
requested him to remain as he was.
- Thus, the Lord is seen in the unique
udhdhana sayi (half-arisen posture) – found only in Sarangapani
Temple.
Historical Significance
- Sri Nathamuni
rediscovered the 4000 Divya Prabandham after hearing devotees
recite verses at this temple.
- The Lord is affectionately called Sri
Araamudhalwan.
- Unlike other temples, this shrine has
no Sorga Vaasal, as the Lord is seen arriving directly from
Vaikunta in his chariot.
Worship Traditions
- Since Kamalavalli was born here, the
Lord is considered the in-house son-in-law, giving priority of
worship to the Goddess.
- Both the main deity (Sri
Aravamudhan) and the processional deity (Sri Sarangapani) are
treated with equal reverence, making this temple an Ubhaya Pradhana
Divya Desa.
- On Diwali day, the Lord
himself performs the shraddh ceremony for a devotee who once served
him and died issueless, honoring his final wish.
