Radha Ashtami,
also known as Radha Jayanti, commemorates the appearance day of Shri
Radha Rani, the eternal consort of Lord Krishna and an incarnation of Goddess
Lakshmi. This sacred festival is celebrated on the Ashtami (8th day)
of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada
(August–September). In 2026, Radha Ashtami falls on Saturday, September 19.
The Divine Birth of Radha
Rani
Born in Barsana,
near Mathura, to Vrishabhanu and Kirti Devi, Radha Rani is believed to
have appeared as a divine manifestation rather than through a mortal birth.
Scriptures describe that Radha did not open her eyes until Lord Krishna was
born, symbolizing her eternal bond with him.
Her birth is celebrated not as a worldly event but as the appearance of divine love and devotion—a reminder that Radha and Krishna are inseparable, representing the union of the individual soul with the Supreme.
Rituals and Celebrations
Radha Ashtami is observed
with grandeur across Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana, and ISKCON temples
worldwide.
Morning Devotion
- Devotees wake before sunrise and
begin the day with prayers and bhajans dedicated to Radha and Krishna.
- Many observe a fast (vrat) to
express devotion and purity of heart.
Temple Rituals
- The idol of Radha Rani is
bathed in Panchamrit (a mixture of milk, curd, ghee, honey, and
sugar).
- She is adorned with new clothes,
flowers, and ornaments, followed by aarti and bhog offerings.
- Devotees chant the Radha Gayatri
Mantra and recite her 108 names.
Midnight Bath at Radha
Kund
In Barsana, devotees wait until midnight to bathe in the sacred Radha Kund, seeking her blessings. On other days, entering or chanting her name near the Kund is restricted, emphasizing the sanctity of this occasion.
Spiritual Significance
Radha Ashtami celebrates divine
love beyond human comprehension. The bond between Radha and Krishna
symbolizes the merging of the individual soul (Radha) with the universal
soul (Krishna).
According to scriptures,
observing the Radha Ashtami vrat brings:
- Prosperity and happiness
- Freedom from sins and negative
thoughts
- Fulfillment of desires
- Spiritual enlightenment and ultimate
salvation
Radha Ashtami is not just a festival—it’s a celebration of pure devotion, eternal love, and divine grace. As devotees chant “Radhe Radhe” and immerse themselves in her worship, they seek the blessings of Shri Radha Rani, the embodiment of compassion and spiritual bliss.
