Deities

  • The Padma Theertham (lotus pond) beside the temple is sacred; a dip here is said to remove doshas.

History & Legends

  • Construction: Begun in 770 A.D. by Madurakavi (minister of Pandya king Parantaka Nedunchadayan), completed by his brother Maaran Eyhinan.
  • Legend of Sage Romasa: Performed penance here; Lord Narasimha appeared in Ugra form. Pacified by Prahlada and Mahalakshmi, He manifested as Yoga Narasimha.
  • Yanaimalai Rock: According to Thiruvilayadal Purana, Lord Shiva transformed a wild elephant into this massive rock using Narasimha Astra. Hence the name Yanai Malai (Elephant Hill).
  • Another legend says Lord Shiva worshipped Yoga Narasimha here to rid himself of Brahmahatya dosham after plucking Brahma’s head.

Architecture

  • Cave Temple: Carved into Yanaimalai rock, with the six‑foot tall Yoga Narasimha idol directly sculpted from the rock face.
  • Layout: Three‑tier gopuram with five kalasas → Maha Mantapam → Artha Mantapam → Garbhagriha.
  • Inscriptions: Pandya period records (11th–13th century) mentioning land grants, victories, and Vedic scholars.

  • Narasimha Jayanthi – celebrated grandly.
  • Maasi Magam (Feb): Sri Kalamega Perumal from Thirumogur visits Narasingam for Gajendra Moksha festival.
