Date & Tithi
Gayatri Japam 2026 will
be observed on Friday, August 28, 2026, the day following Shravana
Purnima. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, it is popularly called Gayatri
Padyami or Gayatri Pratipada, as it coincides with the
Padyami/Pratipada tithi.
Introduction
Gayatri Japam, also known
as Gayatri Japa Sankalpam, is one of the most sacred observances in
Hindu tradition. Rooted in Vedic wisdom, it is dedicated to the chanting of the
Gayatri Mantra, considered the supreme mantra in Hinduism.
This day holds special
importance for Sama Vedi, Rig, and Yajur Brahmins, who chant the mantra
with devotion as part of Avani Avittam and Upakarma rituals in
South India.
Rituals of Gayatri Japam
- Early Morning Bath:
Devotees wake up before sunrise and purify themselves with a sacred bath.
- Initial Puja:
Prayers are offered to deities for enlightenment and wisdom.
- Chanting the Mantra:
- Traditionally, Brahmins chant the Gayatri
Mantra 108 times (some mutts prescribe 1008 times).
- The chanting is performed in the
morning hours within the prescribed muhurta.
- Universal Participation:
Not limited to Brahmins — anyone (Brahmachari, Grihastha,
Vanaprastha) can chant the Gayatri Mantra with sincerity and pure
conscience.
- Daily Practice:
It is considered highly meritorious to chant the mantra three times a
day — at sunrise, noon, and sunset.
The Gayatri Mantra
Dedicated to the Sun
God (Savitr), the Gayatri Mantra is believed to unite the individual soul
with the Supreme Power. Its vibrations purify the mind, body, and spirit.
Significance
- Mentioned in Vedas and Puranas
as the most powerful mantra.
- Gayatri is revered as the Supreme
Goddess, Mother of all mantras.
- Chanting the mantra sincerely is said
to:
- Bestow spiritual and worldly
happiness.
- Purify the soul and absolve sins.
- Enlighten the chanter with wisdom
and divine energy.
