Most temples in India close their doors during solar and lunar eclipses due to sūtaka (ritual impurity). But Sri Kalahasti Temple in Andhra Pradesh stands apart — it remains open, welcoming devotees even at these rare celestial moments.

The Cosmic Connection

• Rahu and Ketu Worship:
  Sri Kalahasti is renowned as the Rahu–Ketu kshetra. Lord Shiva here is adorned with a five-headed serpent symbolizing Ketu, while Goddess Ammavaru wears an ornament representing Rahu. Their presence neutralizes eclipse-related doshas, making worship auspicious rather than forbidden.
• Vayu Lingam’s Power:
  The presiding deity, Vayu Lingeshwara, is one of the Pancha Bhoota Lingas (Air element). Devotees believe this “living” lingam is unaffected by cosmic disturbances, including eclipses.

Rituals During Eclipse

• Grahan Kalabhishekam: Special abhishekam performed during the eclipse, believed to cleanse devotees of grahana doshas.
• Rahu–Ketu Pujas: Thousands flock to perform these rituals, seeking relief from astrological afflictions.
• Continuous Darshan: Unlike other temples, darshan continues uninterrupted, turning the eclipse into a spiritually charged occasion.
