Agni Nakshatram 2026 – Lord Murugan Festival of Purification and Devotion
Agni Nakshatram, one of
the most significant festivals dedicated to Lord Murugan, is celebrated
with immense devotion in Tamil Nadu. Spanning 25 days, from May
4 to May 28, 2026, this festival is deeply connected to celestial
movements, specifically the passage of the Sun through Krittika Nakshatra.
Unlike other Hindu
festivals, Agni Nakshatram is observed during peak summer, symbolizing
endurance, purification, and divine grace. It is celebrated with grandeur at
temples like Palani, Tiruttani, Swamimalai, Tiruchendur, and Palamuthirsolai,
where devotees seek Lord Murugan’s blessings for prosperity and well-being.
Mythological Significance
According to Hindu
beliefs, Lord Murugan, also known as Skanda, Kartikeya, and
Subrahmaniam, is the son of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. He is
revered as the warrior deity, the embodiment of valor and righteousness.
Agni Nakshatram is
astrologically linked with extreme heat and purification. While devotees
consider it an auspicious time to offer prayers, some traditions regard this
period as inauspicious for major events, travel, or financial dealings due to
the harsh summer conditions.
Sacred Rituals and Celebrations
Giri Valam – The Holy
Circumambulation
One of the most prominent
rituals of Agni Nakshatram is the Pradakshina (circumambulation) of the
sacred Palani Hill. Devotees believe that the aromatic medicinal herbs
growing on the hill offer good health and inner peace when inhaled
during this spiritual walk.
Kadamba Flower
Offerings
The Kadamba flower
is regarded as Lord Murugan’s favorite. Female devotees adorn themselves with
Kadamba blooms while praying at Murugan temples, believing that doing so
strengthens their spiritual connection with the deity.
Daily Abhishekam &
Theertha Distribution
During the festival, daily
Abhishekam (sacred bathing) of Lord Murugan is performed at Palani
Temple. The holy water used in the Abhishekam is collected and later
distributed as Theertha, considered highly auspicious. On the final day,
devotees receive Theertha, and sprinkling it in homes, wells, and
temples is believed to bring purification and divine blessings.
Spiritual Discourses
and Temple Fairs
Temples host spiritual
discourses, music programs, and grand celebrations, drawing thousands of
devotees. Religious fairs are organized near Murugan shrines, adding to the
festive atmosphere.
Astrology and
Auspicious Practices
Many devotees avoid performing major life events during Agni Nakshatram due to extreme heat. However, worshiping Lord Murugan during this period is believed to mitigate challenges associated with Mangal (Mars) influences, bringing prosperity and peace.
