Bedi Anjaneya Swamy Temple Tirumala – History, Rituals, Festivals & Travel Guide

Location

  • Situated on Sannidhi Street, directly opposite the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirumala.
  • About 1 km from Tirumala Bus Station, easily accessible by walking.

Deity

  • Dedicated to Lord Hanuman (Anjaneya Swamy).
  • The idol is unique, depicted with hands bound in cuffs (Bedi), symbolizing obedience to his mother Anjana Devi.

Temple Significance

  • Considered one of the most important shrines after Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple and Sri Bhu Varaha Swamy Temple.
  • Daily Naivedyam offered to Lord Venkateswara is also brought here, showing its ritual priority.

History & Legends

  • Legend of Anjana Devi: Hanuman, as a child, wanted to leave Tirumala in search of a camel. His mother tied his hands with cuffs and asked him to stay until she returned. She never came back, so Hanuman remains here in the “Bedi” form.
  • Another tradition says Hanuman appeared as a boy to test Lord Venkateswara’s devotion, later revealing his true form.
  • In Vaishnavite tradition, it is customary to have Garuda or Anjaneya opposite the main temple.

Rituals & Festivals

  • Daily Sevas: Suprabhata, Nitya Aradhana, and Naivedyam.
  • Weekly Ritual: Abhishekam is performed every Sunday to Lord Hanuman.
  • Hanuman Jayanti: A special abhishekam is conducted annually, accompanied by festive pujas and processions.
  • Saturday Sevas: Considered highly auspicious for devotees of Hanuman.

Beliefs

  • Devotees believe worshipping here grants strength, discipline, and protection.
  • The bound hands symbolize self-control and obedience, inspiring devotees to follow dharma.
