What is Dev Diwali?

Dev Diwali, also known as Tripurotsav, is the Festival of Lights of the Gods, celebrated fifteen days after Diwali on Kartik Purnima. It marks the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasur, and is believed to be the day when Devas descend to Earth to bathe in the Ganga. This celestial celebration transforms Varanasi into a radiant spiritual haven.

Rituals and Celebrations

  • Kartik Snan: Devotees begin the day with a holy dip in the Ganges.
  • Deepdan Ceremony: Millions of diyas are lit across the ghats—from Ravidas Ghat to Rajghat—in honor of Goddess Ganga and the Devas.
  • Ganga Aarti: A grand aarti is performed by 24 Brahmin priests and 24 girls, accompanied by Vedic chants.
  • Home Decorations: Houses are adorned with oil lamps and rangoli; many host Akhand Ramayana recitations and offer bhog.
  • Processions & Fireworks: Streets come alive with decorated deity processions, cultural performances, and dazzling fireworks.
  • Tulsi Vivah Conclusion: Dev Diwali also marks the end of Tulsi Vivah rituals, closing the Diwali season.

Mythological Significance

Dev Diwali commemorates Lord Shiva’s triumph over Tripurasur, symbolizing the destruction of ego and ignorance. The tradition of lighting diyas began at Panchganga Ghat in 1985, and has since become a hallmark of Varanasi’s spiritual identity.

🇮🇳 Patriotic Tribute

Beyond its religious essence, Dev Diwali honors India’s brave martyrs. Organized by Ganga Seva Nidhi, the event includes:

  • Wreath-laying ceremonies
  • Bhajans and patriotic songs
  • Bhartiya Shourya Samman awards
  • Traditional Last Post by Army, Navy, and Air Force

Regional Variations

  • Gujarat & Northern India: Celebrated with diyas and processions.
  • Coinciding Festivals: Guru Nanak Jayanti and Jain Light Festival also fall on Kartik Purnima.
