Amidst the dense forests
of Kannur district, on the banks of the roaring River Bavali,
unfolds one of Kerala’s most spiritually charged festivals — the Vaishaka Mahotsavam.
Celebrated for 28 days between May 23 – June 24, 2026, this
ancient ritual at the twin temples of Akkare Kottiyoor and Ikkare Kottiyoor
offers a rare blend of devotion, mythology, and nature’s grandeur.
The Sacred Setting
The Akkare Kottiyoor Temple,
open only during the festival, houses a swayambhoo lingam (self‑manifested
Shiva idol) placed on a manithara — a platform made of river stones.
Across the river, the Ikkare Kottiyoor Temple remains active year‑round.
The tranquil Sahya mountain range and the medicinal waters of the Bavali River
create a divine backdrop for this spiritual celebration.
Key Rituals &
Highlights
- Neyyattam:
Pouring of ghee, initiated by bringing a sacred sword from Muthirerikavu (Wayanad).
- Rohini Aaradhana:
Priest embraces the swayambhoo lingam — symbolizing divine union.
- Elaneer Vayppu & Elaneerattam:
Tender coconuts offered and poured over the idol.
- Bhandaram Ezhunnallath:
Gold and silver vessels transported from Manathana village to
Kottiyoor.
- Ezhunnallippu:
Procession of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi idols carried by elephants.
- Aanayootu:
Ceremonial feeding of elephants, symbolizing harmony with nature.
Mythological Roots
The festival traces its
origin to the Daksha Yaga legend. It is believed that this sacred site
marks where Sati, consort of Lord Shiva, immolated herself, leading to
Shiva’s wrath and the creation of Veerabhadra. The subsequent
restoration of the yagna and Daksha’s resurrection with a goat’s head symbolize
forgiveness and cosmic balance.
Spiritual Experience
Over 100,000 devotees
participate annually, drawn by the festival’s purity and natural setting. The
absence of permanent structures at Akkare Kottiyoor reflects the transient
nature of life and devotion — a reminder that spirituality thrives in
simplicity.
