Nestled atop Chilupurgutta Hill in Jangaon District, Telangana, the Sri Bugulu Venkateswara Swamy Temple is a sacred destination revered as the Telangana Tirupati. This ancient shrine, surrounded by serene landscapes, draws thousands of devotees seeking blessings from Lord Srinivasa, the embodiment of compassion and divine refuge.
The Divine Legend
According to legend, Lord
Srinivasa faced financial hardship before his divine marriage to Goddess
Padmavathi on Vaisakha Suddha Dashami, Friday. On Sage Narada’s
advice, he borrowed money from Kubera, with Lord Brahma, Lord
Maheshwara, and Ashwathama signing as witnesses. Srinivasa promised
to repay the interest during Kali Yuga and the principal at its end.
After the grand wedding, King
Thondaman built a temple near Seshachala Pushkarini as a permanent
abode for the Lord. Later, when Goddess Mahalakshmi returned, Srinivasa
transformed into Shilaamurthy (stone form).
Arrival at Chilupurgutta
Burdened by debt and
sorrow, Lord Srinivasa left Tirumala and reached Chilupurgutta, resting
in a cave with his head bowed in despair. The term “Gubulu” (meaning
dejected) gradually evolved into “Bugulu”, giving rise to the name Sri
Bugulu Venkateswara Swamy.
The idol here depicts Lord
Srinivasa in a resting posture, symbolizing divine patience and relief from
worldly burdens.
