Introduction
The Chenna Kesava
Temple at Sompalle village, Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh, is a
magnificent shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Built originally by a local
chieftain under the later Cholas and later expanded by the Vijayanagara
kings in the 16th century CE, this temple stands as a testament to South
Indian temple architecture. Recognized as a Monument of National Importance
by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), it continues to attract
devotees and history enthusiasts alike.
Architectural Splendor
The temple faces east and
is adorned with a three-tiered Rajagopuram, of which two tiers survive
today.
- Dhwaja Sthambam:
A 52-foot-high monolithic pillar with intricate carvings, standing tall
before the sanctum.
- Deepa Sthambam:
Positioned alongside, symbolizing eternal light.
- Mandapas:
The temple features a Maha Mandapa, Mukha Mandapa, and a Kalyana
Mandapa with richly carved columns depicting miniature figures,
animals, and scrollwork.
- Mural Art:
Ceilings of the Maha Mandapa and Mukha Mandapa display exquisite Ramayana
scenes.
- Unique Features:
A stone chariot with granite wheels, Uyyala Mandapa, and tall-pillared
sub-shrines highlight Vijayanagara craftsmanship.
The temple is classified
as a Dvitala structure, with the second tala in brick featuring koshta,
panjara, and sala designs, along with a cornice projecting at the center.
Sanctum & Deities
The sanctum houses Lord
Chenna Kesava (Vishnu), worshipped with grandeur. The Garuda shrine and
Balipitha are located immediately after the Rajagopuram. The temple’s carvings,
brackets, and doorways are richly decorated, reflecting the artistic excellence
of the Vijayanagara era.
