Introduction
Long before Manipal
became a global education hub, the region was known in ancient texts as Vedachala.
At the heart of this transformation stands Geetha Mandir, one of
Manipal’s oldest meditation centres. Established by Upendra Pai, a
devout follower of the Bhagavad Gita and Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Geetha Mandir
continues to serve as a spiritual and cultural sanctuary for the community.
Historical Background
- Nearly 600 years ago, the Gowda
Saraswat Brahmin community settled in Tonse after fleeing Portuguese
persecution.
- After 13 generations, Upendra Pai,
son of Anantha Pai, arrived at a barren hillock called Mannapalla,
where tigers roamed and muddy ponds dotted the landscape.
- Over time, Mannapalla evolved into present‑day
Manipal, and with it arose the need for a peaceful spiritual space.
- Upendra Pai built a small room named Geetha
Mandir, where bhajans and meditation sessions began, accompanied by
Ramakrishna’s portrait.
Growth into a Cultural
Hub
- Festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi
and Raksha Bandhan became annual traditions.
- Ekadashi bhajans and prayers
were held regularly.
- The centre hosted cultural programmes, fulfilling Pai’s vision of blending spirituality with community life.
