Raju (ASR) district in Andhra Pradesh is a land of contrasts—ranging from
the cool high altitudes of Araku Valley to the dense forests of Rampachodavaram.
This diverse geography is home to some of the most significant and culturally
rich temples in the region. Each shrine carries unique legends, tribal
traditions, and architectural marvels, making ASR a fascinating destination for
spiritual seekers and travelers alike.
1. Sri Modakondamma
Thalli Temple – Guardian Goddess of the Eastern Ghats
- Importance:
Revered by tribal communities, Modakondamma is considered the guardian
deity of the region. Locals seek her blessings before any auspicious
event.
- Timings:
6:00 AM – 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM – 9:00 PM
- Festivals:
Modakondamma Jathara (May) – a 3-day tribal festival with Dhimsa
dance and fairs.
- Location:
In Paderu town, 120 km from Visakhapatnam, 40 km from Araku Valley.
2. Sri Matsyalingeswara
Swamy Temple (Matsyagundam) – The Sacred Fish Pool
- Importance:
Famous for its divine fish pool, where feeding fish is allowed but fishing
is strictly prohibited.
- Timings:
Best between 6:00 AM – 5:00 PM due to forest location.
- Festivals:
Maha Shivaratri and Karthika Masam.
- Location:
Near Mattam village, 47 km from Araku, 115 km from Vizag. Best reached by
private cab.
3. Swayambhu Shiva Temple
– Inside Borra Caves
- Importance:
A naturally formed stalagmite Shiva Lingam inside the million-year-old
Borra Caves. Water drips onto the Lingam from a cow-udder-shaped rock,
believed to be the origin of the Gosthani River.
- Timings:
10:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Borra Caves entry hours).
- Festivals:
Maha Shivaratri with tribal worship.
- Location:
Borra village, 36 km from Araku, 90 km from Vizag. Accessible via road or
the Vistadome train to Borra Guhalu station.
4. Vykuntagiri
Venkateswara Swamy Temple – Hill Shrine of Araku
- Importance:
A high-altitude Venkateswara temple offering panoramic views of Araku
Valley. Known for peace and breathtaking sunrise/sunset views.
- Timings:
6:00 AM – 9:00 PM
- Festivals:
Vaikuntha Ekadashi and other Vaishnavite festivals.
- Location:
In Araku Colony, accessible via ghat road and local taxis.
5. Ancient Rampa
Shivalayam – Chola-Era Stone Temple
- Importance:
Built in the 12th century by the Cholas, featuring rustic stone pillars
and shaded by forest trees.
- Timings:
6:00 AM – 12:00 PM, 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM
- Festivals:
Maha Shivaratri and Karthika Masam.
- Location:
2 km from Rampachodavaram town, near Rampa Waterfalls. Nearest city:
Rajahmundry (50 km).
6. Sri Gadi Bapanamma
Thalli Temple – Guardian of Maredumilli Forests
- Importance:
A Gramadevatha (village guardian) worshipped by travelers and truck
drivers for safe passage through the ghat roads of Maredumilli.
- Timings:
6:00 AM – 6:00 PM
- Festivals:
Gadi Bapanamma Jatara, a major cultural event.
- Location:
Sitapalli village, on the Rampachodavaram–Maredumilli route.
Traveler’s Note
The ASR district is
divided into two distinct temple circuits:
- Araku/Paderu Circuit:
Temples 1–4 (Modakondamma, Matsyagundam, Borra Caves Shiva, Vykuntagiri).
- Rampachodavaram/Maredumilli Circuit:
Temples 5–6 (Rampa Shivalayam, Gadi Bapanamma).
Due to mountainous
terrain, attempting both circuits in a single day is impractical. Plan separate
trips for each hub.
