History and Legends
The Thirupuliyangudi
Perumal Temple is one of the Nava Tirupati temples on the banks of
the sacred Thamiraparani River. Revered in the Nalayira Divya
Prabandham by the Alvar saints (6th–9th centuries CE), it is also
classified as a Divya Desam.
According to legend, Lord
Vishnu once visited earth but did not meet Bhudevi, who withdrew to the
netherworld in anger. As life on earth began to decay, the devas prayed to
Vishnu. Accompanied by Sridevi, Vishnu pacified Bhudevi and restored her
presence, reviving life. Hence, he is worshipped here as Bhumipalar –
Guardian of the Earth.
The temple is also
associated with Budha (Mercury) among the Navagraha temples, making it
spiritually significant for planetary worship.
Architecture
- Built in Dravidian style,
enclosed by a granite wall.
- The rajagopuram (gateway
tower) is flat in structure, unlike towering gopurams seen elsewhere.
- The sanctum houses Vishnu as
Bhumipalar, with a lotus stalk from his navel emanating Brahma.
- Shrines for Bhudevi and Sridevi are
located inside the sanctum.
- The temple has two prakarams
(precincts) and a Garuda shrine.
- Festival idols are richly adorned
during rituals and processions.
Rituals and Festivals
- Daily Rituals:
Six pujas performed in the Tenkalai tradition and Pancharathra
Agama, including Kalasanthi (8 AM), Uchikalam (12 PM), Sayarakshai (6
PM), and Ardha Jamam (8 PM). Each ritual involves decoration (alangaram),
food offering (neivethanam), and lamp waving (deepa aradanai).
- Major Festivals:
- Vaikuntha Ekadashi (Margali,
Dec–Jan): A 10-day grand celebration with
special rituals.
- Garuda Sevai Utsavam (Vaikasi,
May–Jun): The most spectacular festival,
where all nine Nava Tirupati temples participate. Idols are brought on
Garuda vahanas, while Nammalvar’s idol is carried across paddy fields on
a palanquin. His pasurams (verses) dedicated to each temple are
recited at the respective shrines.
Beliefs
- Devotees believe Lord Vishnu as Bhumipalar
protects the earth and restores balance whenever Bhudevi withdraws her
presence.
- Worship here is said to bring relief
from planetary afflictions, especially those linked to Budha
(Mercury).
- Chanting Nammalvar’s pasurams
during the Garuda Sevai festival is believed to grant spiritual merit and
blessings.
