Nestled atop a small
hillock in Sambalpur city, Odisha, the Budharaja Temple stands as
a serene symbol of devotion and heritage. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this
ancient shrine offers panoramic views of the city and a spiritually uplifting
experience for devotees and travelers alike.
Deity & Significance
The
presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, worshipped here as the
cosmic dancer and destroyer of ignorance. The temple’s inner sanctum features a
striking twelve‑armed dancing Shiva idol and an eight‑armed
Mahisasuramardini, representing divine power and protection.
Architecture
Built
around 700 years ago, Budharaja Temple showcases classic Kalinga
architectural style with:
- Rekha Vimana
(sanctum tower)
- Pidha Jagamohana
(assembly hall)
- Pillared open mandapa
(outer hall)
Both
the Vimana and Jagamohana are square in plan, resting on a
stepped platform. The intricate carvings and stone idols reflect the artistic
excellence of medieval Odisha.

concrete road leads from the base of the hill to the temple. Devotees
can also climb 108 steps to reach the top, symbolizing spiritual ascent
and purification.
