Thrissur Pooram 2026: Date, History, Highlights & Travel Guide to Kerala’s Grand Festival

Thrissur Pooram, celebrated at Thekkinkadu Maidanam in the heart of Thrissur district, is Kerala’s most resplendent temple festival. Known as the Mother of all Poorams, this grand spectacle unites spirituality, tradition, and cultural magnificence. In 2026, the festival will be held on April 26, promising yet another unforgettable celebration of Kerala’s heritage.

Historical Legacy

The festival was conceptualized over 200 years ago by Shakthan Thampuran, the visionary Maharaja of Kochi. Before Thrissur Pooram, the Arattupuzha Pooram was Kerala’s largest temple festival. However, when heavy rains delayed several temples from participating, Thrissur’s leaders created their own celebration. Shakthan Thampuran later unified ten temples around Vadakumnathan Temple, dividing them into:

  • Western Group: Thiruvambady, Kanimangalam, Laloor, Ayyanthole, Nethilakkavu
  • Eastern Group: Paramekkavu, Karamukku, Chembukkavu, Choorakottukavu, Panamukkampilly

This unity transformed Thrissur Pooram into a mass festival that continues to mesmerize thousands.
