Holashtak – The 8-Day Period Before Holi

Duration

  • Begins: Phalguna Shukla Ashtami
  • Ends: Phalguna Purnima (the day of Holika Dahan & Holi)

Significance

  • Observed mostly in North India, Holashtak is considered an inauspicious period leading up to Holi.
  • According to mythology:
    • It was during these eight days that Prahlada was tortured by his father Hiranyakashipu and his aunt Holika.
    • Lord Shiva burnt Kama Deva to ashes during this time. Later, Kama was resurrected after eight days of penance by his wife Rati.

Thus, Holashtak symbolizes trials, penance, and eventual renewal.
