Apara Ekadashi, also
known as Achala Ekadashi, Bhadrakali Ekadashi, Viashakha Vadi Ekadashi, and
Jalakrida Ekadashi, is a sacred Hindu fasting day observed during the Krishna
Paksha of Jyeshtha month. Where as in South India it is observed during
Vaishaka Month. This Ekadashi is deeply revered as a means to cleanse one's
sins and attain Moksha, making it a significant occasion for devotees
across India.

scriptures, observing Apara Ekadashi grants spiritual merit equivalent
to performing numerous sacred rites at pilgrimage sites. Some of these acts

Observance
Bhadrakali Ekadashi
(Northern India)
In Punjab, Haryana,
and Jammu & Kashmir, Apara Ekadashi is known as Bhadrakali Ekadashi
and is considered an auspicious day for worshipping Goddess Bhadra Kali.
It holds special significance for Aryan Saraswat Brahmins, who observe
the day with devotional offerings.
Jalakrida Ekadashi
(Odisha)
In Puri, Odisha,
this Ekadashi is referred to as Jalakrida Ekadashi, where devotees
celebrate it as a festival dedicated to Lord Jagannath. The rituals here
revolve around holy water offerings and prayers for prosperity.
Rituals and Observance
The Apara Ekadashi
vrat is observed from sunrise to sunrise the next day. While some
devotees undertake strict fasting, others observe a partial fast
by consuming only fruits and milk. Importantly, food containing rice
and grains is strictly avoided.
