Jaya Ekadashi,
also known as Bhoumi Ekadashi or Bhishma Ekadashi, is observed on
the 11th day (Ekadashi) of Shukla Paksha in the month of Magha. It is a
sacred fasting day dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and is considered
especially auspicious when it falls on a Thursday.
In 2026, Jaya Ekadashi
falls on Thursday, January 29.
Significance
- Vishnu Worship:
- Devotees seek freedom from sins
and moksha (liberation) by observing this vrat.
- Bhishma Connection:
- This Ekadashi is part of the Bhishma
Paksha, and marks the day Bhishma Pitamaha recited the Vishnu
Sahasranama to Yudhishthira.

- Ekadashi Vrat (Fasting):
- Begins on Dashami tithi (Jan
28) by avoiding grains after sunrise.
- Waterless fast
from sunrise of Ekadashi to sunrise of Dwadashi (Jan 30).
- No rice, grains, or oil application
allowed.
- Vishnu Puja:
- Early morning bath and worship of Lord
Vishnu’s idol with sandalwood, sesame, fruits, lamp, and incense.
- Recitation of Vishnu Sahasranama
and Narayan Stotra.
