Bhishma Ekadashi,
also known as Bhoumi Ekadashi or Jaya Ekadashi, is observed on
the 11th day (Ekadashi) of Shukla Paksha in the month of Magha. It is a
sacred day for Lord Vishnu’s devotees and commemorates the moment when Bhishma
Pitamaha imparted the Vishnu Sahasranama to the Pandavas while lying
on his bed of arrows.
In 2026, Bhishma Ekadashi
falls on Thursday, January 29.
Significance
- Vishnu Sahasranama Jayanti:
- On this day, Bhishma Pitamaha
recited the Vishnu Sahasranama Stotra to Yudhishthira, making it
the birth anniversary of the sacred hymn.
- Part of Bhishma Paksha:
- This Ekadashi falls between Bhishma
Ashtami and Bhishma Dwadashi, forming a spiritually potent
period dedicated to Bhishma’s wisdom and devotion.
- Jaya Ekadashi:
- Also known as Jaya Ekadashi,
it is believed that observing this fast grants freedom from sins and
liberation from rebirth.
Rituals & Observances
- Ekadashi Vrat (Fasting):

avoiding grains and beans.
- Some observe nirjala vrat
(without water), while others follow phalahar (fruit and milk).
