Bhishma Dwadashi Story

  • Devavrata, son of Ganga and Shantanu, later known as Bhishma, was born with divine qualities.
  • Shantanu’s love for Matsyagandha (Satyavati) led to Bhishma’s vow of lifelong celibacy to ensure her son’s succession.
  • His sacrifice and loyalty earned him the boon of Iccha Mrityu (death at will).
  • Bhishma chose to leave his body during Uttarayana, and his spiritual teachings culminated on Bhishma Dwadashi.
