Margashira Masam (also spelled Margashirsha) is the ninth month in the Hindu lunar calendar and holds profound spiritual significance in Sanatan Dharma, especially among Vaishnavas. It typically falls between November and December, marking the onset of Hemanta Ruthu (early winter).

Scriptural Significance

  • Bhagavad Gita (10.35):
    “Masanaan Margashirshoham, Ritunaan Kusumakarah”
    “Among months, I am Margashirsha; among seasons, I am spring.”
    Lord Krishna identifies himself with this sacred month, making it ideal for Krishna Bhakti and spiritual renewal.
  • Skanda Purana:
    Advises devotees to observe fasts, river baths, and devotional offerings during this month to receive divine blessings.

Rituals and Observances

  • Margashira Lakshmi Vratam:
    Observed on all Thursdays, especially by women, to invoke Goddess Lakshmi for prosperity and harmony.
  • Ekadashi Worship:
    Perform Panchamrutha Abhishekam to Lord Vishnu on both Ekadashi days.
  • Pushkarini Day (Margashira Shuddha Dwadashi):
    Celebrated in Tirumala, where a holy dip in the temple tank is considered supremely auspicious.
  • Tulasi Worship:
    Offering prayers to Goddess Tulasi is believed to remove sins and attract divine blessings.
  • Sacred River Baths:
    Bathing in holy rivers during Brahma Muhurta for at least three days is said to fulfill all desires. For women, it ensures long life and health for their husbands.
  • Daily Offerings to Krishna:
    Offer Makhan Mishri mixed with Tulasi leaves to Lord Krishna daily. This pleases him and removes worldly troubles.
