When It Begins
Navaratri starts with the
Aswayuja month of the Indian lunar calendar (September–October). The
festival spans nine nights and culminates on Vijayadasami,
symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.
Spiritual Significance
- ‘Nava’
means nine, and ‘Ratri’ means night in Sanskrit.
- The tenth day, Vijayadasami,
is considered auspicious for new beginnings—be it learning, music, or
spiritual pursuits.
Regional Celebrations
North & West India
- Celebrates Rama’s victory over
Ravana.
- Kullu Dussehra
in Himachal Pradesh features grand processions.
- In Gujarat, devotees perform Garba
and Dandiya, lighting diyas in honor of Goddess Durga.
East India
- Worship of Durga’s battle with
Mahishasura.
- Each day honors a different form of
Durga:

display of dolls representing divine themes, stories, and modern scenes.
- Daily rangoli, lamp
lighting, and sundal offerings mark the festivities.
- Women visit homes, sing devotional
songs, and exchange gifts and tamboolam.
Tirumala
- Navaratri Brahmotsavam
is celebrated with grandeur.
- Lord Malayappa Swamy is taken
in procession on various vahanas through the mada streets.
- Concludes with Thirumanjanam
and Chakrasnanam.
Telangana
- Bathukamma Panduga
honors Gouri Devi.
- Women create vibrant flower stacks,
sing and dance around them, and immerse them in water bodies on Navami.
Rituals & Austerities
- Chanting of Lalita Sahasranamam,
Lakshmi Ashtotharam, and other stotras.
- Many observe fasts, eat
sattvic food, and perform Ayudha Pooja—worshipping tools, vehicles,
and instruments.
Mysore Dasara
- The city glows with lights and
festoons.
- On Vijayadasami, Goddess Chamundi
is taken in procession atop a decorated elephant in a golden mantap.
Blessings of the Goddess
Navaratri celebrates Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati, who bestow health, wealth, and wisdom upon devotees. The festival is a vibrant expression of bhakti, creativity, and cultural unity across India.
