Among the five sacred
idols (Pancha Berams) in the Tirumala temple, Moola Virat (Dhruva
Beram) is the main deity. The second most important is Sri Bhoga Srinivasa
Moorthy, also known as:
- Kautuka Beram
– the idol used for daily rituals
- Purusha Beram
– representing the enjoyer of all offerings
- Manavala Perumal
– the eternal bridegroom (Manavalan means bridegroom in Tamil)
This silver idol, about
1.5 feet tall, is placed near the feet of the main deity and symbolizes divine
enjoyment and intimacy with devotees.
Daily Rituals & Sevas
- Suprabhatam to Thomala Seva:
Every morning, Bhoga Srinivasa Moorthy is bathed with sacred water from Akasa
Ganga Theertham.
- Abhishekams:
All daily abhishekams are performed to this idol, not the Moola
Virat.
- Sahasra Kalasa Abhishekam:
Every Wednesday at 6 AM in the Maha Mandapam, 1000 silver vessels of holy
water are used in a grand ritual. The idol is connected to the Moola Virat
with a silk or gold thread, symbolizing unity.
- Accompanying Deities:
During this abhishekam, Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi sametha Malayappa Swamy
are placed on one side, and Vishwaksena on the other, facing south.
Ekantha Seva &
Pavvalimpu Seva
- Every night, Bhoga Srinivasa Moorthy
reclines on a hanging silk cot held by four silver chains.
- His head faces south, surrounded by rangoli
in honor of Tarigonda Vengamamba.
- Two silver lamps are lit by the Sannidhi
Golla, and Pancha Kajjayam, sugar-mixed milk, and fruit salad
are offered.
- Sandalwood paste
is applied in symbolic portions: near the feet, on the chest, and for Sri
Maha Lakshmi.
- A descendant of Annamacharya
sings a lullaby with a tambura, followed by Muthyala Harati to both
the Moola Virat and Bhoga Srinivasa Moorthy.
- During Dhanurmasam, this seva
is offered to Sri Krishna instead.
Historical Legacy
- The idol was gifted in 614 A.D.
by Pallava Queen Samavayi (also known as Kadavan Perun Devi).
- During repairs to Ananda Nilayam, she
constructed Tiruvilan Koil (now Snapana Mandapam) to
continue worship uninterrupted.
- She instituted Nitya Pooja, Nitya
Abhishekam, and a procession in the Tamil month of Puratasi.
- Her generous donations of ornaments and land ensured Bhoga Srinivasa Moorthy’s permanent role in temple rituals.
