Introduction
Nestled in the serene
town of Sonepur in Subarnapur district, Odisha, the Subarnameru
Temple stands as a radiant symbol of devotion and legend. Dedicated to Lord
Subarnameru Mahadev, an incarnation of Lord Shiva, this temple is often
hailed as the “Second Varanasi of India.”
The Legend of Subarnameru
Mahadev
According to ancient
lore, the shrine enshrines a Sivalingam within a circular Yonipitha,
installed inside the sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha). The temple is
believed to have been originally built by a merchant named Neulisa.
The legend of the “Gold
Coin Rain” is deeply associated with this sacred site. It is said that when
a devoted follower prayed to Lord Shiva for help, the Lord showered gold coins
upon him — giving rise to the name Sonepur (Subarnapur), meaning “City
of Gold.”
