Set near Dwarka in
Gujarat, Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas
that draws countless Shiva devotees. The temple is revered not only for its
peaceful aura but also for its powerful legends that continue to shape the
faith of pilgrims today.
The Legend of Supriya and
Daruka
According to the Shiva
Purana, Supriya, a devout follower of Lord Shiva, was captured by the
demoness Daruka. Even in captivity, he inspired fellow prisoners to chant “Om
Namah Shivaya.” Enraged, Daruka ordered his death, but Lord Shiva appeared,
destroyed the demonic forces, and manifested as a Jyotirlinga at the site. This
story gives Nageshwar its enduring symbolism of protection, courage, and
unwavering faith.
The Pandava Connection
Local traditions say the
Pandavas worshipped Lord Shiva here during their exile, meditating near the
coastal surroundings of Dwarka. Though historical evidence is limited, the
belief adds emotional depth and connects the shrine to the epic journey of the
Mahabharata.
