The Sri Bhadra Maruti
Temple, located in Kuldabad city, Maharashtra, is one of the most
unique shrines dedicated to Lord Hanuman. Unlike most temples where Hanuman is
depicted standing or sitting, here He is seen in a reclining (sleeping)
posture, a rare representation found only in three places across India.
The Legend
In ancient times,
Kuldabad was known as Bhadravati, ruled by King Bhadrasena, an
ardent devotee of Lord Rama. The king would sing soulful hymns in Rama’s
praise. Listening to these devotional songs, Hanuman descended to the spot and,
overwhelmed by divine bliss, entered a Bhava-Samadhi (yogic trance) in a
reclining posture. Astonished, King Bhadrasena requested Hanuman to remain
there forever, blessing devotees with His presence.
