Shakti Peethas – The Sacred Story of Devi Sati & 51 Temples of Shakti
The legend of the Shakti
Peethas is one of the most profound narratives in Hindu tradition—a tale of
love, loss, and the eternal power of Shakti. These sacred sites, spread across
India and beyond, are living testaments to faith and devotion.
The Legend of Devi Sati
Devi Sati, daughter of
Daksha Prajapati, married Lord Shiva against her father’s wishes. Daksha,
disapproving of Shiva’s ascetic life, organized a grand yagna but deliberately
excluded him. Unable to bear the insult, Sati immolated herself in grief and anger.
Lord Shiva, devastated,
performed the Tandava—the cosmic dance of destruction. To save the
universe, Lord Vishnu intervened, using his Sudarshana Chakra to cut Sati’s
body into pieces. These fragments fell across the subcontinent, sanctifying
each location as a Shakti Peetha, where the divine feminine energy is
eternally worshipped.
The Spread of Shakti
