Legends
- According to tradition, Sage
Agastya was once accused of committing the sin of killing a Brahma. To
absolve himself, he performed rigorous penance at this Shivalinga.

freed him from the sin. From then on, the shrine became famous as Agastyeshwar
Mahadev.
- The temple is considered very
ancient, linked to the sacred Mahakal forest (Mahakal Van)
where sages performed austerities.
