Sankashti Chaturthi, also called Sankatahara Chaturthi in South India, is a monthly vrat dedicated to Lord Ganesha. It falls on the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi (fourth day after full moon). When it coincides with a Tuesday, it is known as Angarki Chaturthi—considered the most auspicious of all Sankashti days.

Significance

  • Sankashti (Sanskrit) means deliverance during difficult times.
  • Devotees believe Lord Ganesha removes obstacles and grants success when worshipped on this day.
  • Angarki Chaturthi is especially powerful for fulfilling desires and blessings.
  • Couples often observe this vrat for progeny and prosperity.

Rituals

  • Fasting: Strict fast from sunrise to moonrise; some observe partial fast with fruits, peanuts, potatoes, sabudana khichdi.
  • Puja: Evening worship after moonrise. Idol decorated with Durva grass and flowers; lamp lit; incense offered.
  • Vrat Katha: Devotees read the month‑specific story (13 in total, including Adhika Masa).
  • Naivedya: Modaks and Lord Ganesha’s favorite sweets offered.
  • Moon Worship: Water, sandal paste, rice, and flowers offered to Chandra (Moon God).
  • Chanting: Recite Ganesha Ashtothra, Sankashtnashana Stotra, Vakrathunda Mahakaya, and other Vedic hymns.

Monthly Observance

  • Observed every lunar month.
  • Each month has a unique peeta (lotus petal) and name of Ganesha.
  • Total of 13 vrats annually, including the extra Adhika Masa every four years.
