Why Lighting Deepam Is
Sacred in Karthika Masam
Lighting diyas (deepams)
during Karthika Masam is one of the most spiritually uplifting practices in
Hindu tradition. It symbolizes the invitation of divine energies into our homes
and hearts, purifying the soul and dispelling darkness.
- Start to End of Karthika Masam:
Diyas are lit daily from the first day till the end of the month.
- Placement:
Diyas are placed:
- In front of the Tulasi plant
- Near the main entrance
- Before sunrise and after sunset
- Temple Practice:
Devotees light deepams in temples as part of daily worship.
Akasa Deepam – The
Celestial Flame
In many temples, a large
lamp is lit atop the Dwajastambha or on nearby hills. This is called Akasa
Deepam, symbolizing the offering of light to the heavens and inviting the
blessings of devatas.
Deeparadhana – Soul
Purification
Special Deeparadhana
is performed during this month to cleanse the soul of past misdeeds. The light
of the deepam is believed to burn away karmic impurities.
Karthika Purnima –
Jwalathoranotsavam
On Karthika Purnima,
all Shiva temples celebrate Jwalathoranotsavam, a grand festival of
lights and devotion. Rows of lamps are lit, creating a divine ambiance that
honors Lord Shiva.
