Sarva Pitru Amavasya – Honoring Ancestors with Reverence and Ritual
Sarva Pitru Amavasya, also known as Mahalaya Amavasya, is the most sacred day of Pitru Paksha, the fortnight dedicated to ancestral worship in Hindu tradition. It is observed on the New Moon day (Amavasya) during Ashwin month (North Indian calendar) and Bhadrapada month (South Indian calendar).

of Pitru Paksha, offering a universal opportunity to perform Shraddha
and Tarpan for all departed ancestors—especially for those whose death
tithi is unknown or missed.

     express gratitude, and seek forgiveness from forefathers
- Believed to bring peace to
     ancestral souls and prosperity to descendants
- Helps remove Pitru Dosha and
     karmic imbalances in the family lineage
Rituals to Perform
- Early Morning Bath:
     Preferably in a river or with Ganga water
- Tarpan:
     Offer water mixed with black sesame seeds, barley, and kusha grass while
     facing south
- Shraddha Ceremony:
     Performed by the eldest male in the family
- Offerings:
     Dhoop, diya, flowers, and sattvik food like kheer, puri, and vegetables
- Feeding Brahmins:
     Meals and dakshina are offered to Brahmins and the needy
- Remembrance:
