The
Gundicha Temple is a significant temple located in Puri, Odisha.
It is closely associated with the Jagannath Rath Yatra, serving as the
destination where Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra stay for seven days
during the annual festival.
Significance
- The temple is known as the "Garden
House of Jagannath", as it is surrounded by lush greenery.
- It is believed to be the aunt’s
house of Lord Jagannath, where he visits during the Rath Yatra.
- The temple remains vacant for most
of the year, except during the Rath Yatra, when the deities reside
here.
Architecture
- Built in Kalinga style, the
temple is made of light-grey sandstone.
- It consists of four main sections:
- Vimana
(sanctum)
- Jagamohana
(assembly hall)
- Nata Mandapa
(festival hall)
- Bhoga Mandapa
(hall of offerings)
- The temple has two gates:
- Western Gate
– Used for the entry of deities during Rath Yatra.
- Eastern Gate (Nakachana Gate)
