The Panniyur Sri
Varahamurthy Temple, located in Kumbidi, Pattambi taluk, Palakkad
district, Kerala, is one of the oldest and most revered temples in South
India. According to legend, it was established nearly 4000 years ago by Lord
Parashurama, making it the first temple consecrated in Kerala.
Dedicated to Lord Varaha, the third avatar of Vishnu, alongside Goddess
Bhumi, this temple holds a special place in Vaishnavite tradition and is
considered one of the 108 Abhimana Kshetrams.

Significance
- Believed to be the first temple
consecrated in Kerala by Lord Parashurama after reclaiming land from
the sea.
- For over 3000 years, it was
regarded as one of Kerala’s most prominent temples.
- Between 800 BCE and 600 CE,
Lord Varaha was worshipped as the supreme deity of Kerala,
especially in the Panniyur region.
- The temple was home to Panniyuraayiram,
a powerful cultural organization with 1000 members managing religious and
social affairs.

- The temple is also believed to be
blessed by Chitragupta and Yakshi.

- Sandhya Deeparadhana:
The most auspicious darshan, when the idol is adorned with sandalwood
paste and jewelry.
- Bhoomi Pooja:
Performed to resolve land disputes or reclaim lost property. Devotees
bring soil from the four corners of their land.

A wish-fulfillment ritual for success in personal aspirations.

- By Train:
Nearest station is Pattambi Railway Station (5 km). Auto-rickshaws
and taxis are available for a 10–15 minute ride.
- By Air:
Nearest airport is Calicut International Airport (75 km). Taxis or
pre-booked cabs connect via Pattambi.
- By Road:
Kumbidi is well connected by buses from Palakkad, Thrissur, and
Kozhikode. Drivers can use NH 66 or SH 39, with the temple
located just off the main road in Kumbidi village.
