Salakatla Vasanthotsavam 2026 in Tirumala: A Divine Spring Festival

The sacred hill town of Tirumala is all set to celebrate the Salakatla Vasanthotsavam from March 30 to April 1, 2026. This three-day annual spring festival, observed in the Chaitra month, marks the arrival of the season of blossoms and devotion.

Origins of Vasanthotsavam

According to temple legend, the Vasanthotsavams were introduced during the reign of King Achyutaraya in the 1460s. The rituals symbolize offering soothing relief to the deities from the scorching Sun during spring.

Rituals and Preparations

The festival begins with Ankurarpanam (sowing of nine kinds of seeds) on the day of Uttarabhadra star, a day before the main celebrations.

  • Punyahavachanam (purification rites)
  • Vasthu Santhi (worship of nature and its elements)
  • Samprokshanam (sprinkling of holy water)

These sacred rituals are performed by temple priests and are not open to the public.

Celebrations at Vasanta Mandapam

On all three days, Sri Malayappa Swamy and His consorts Sridevi and Bhudevi are brought to the beautifully decorated Vasanta Mandapam.

  • Day 1 & 2: Snapana Tirumanjanam (holy bath with aromatic ingredients) is performed.
  • Day 2 Morning: The utsava deities parade on the Swarna Ratham along the four mada streets, blessing devotees.
  • Day 3: A grand procession features Sri Rama with Sita, Lakshmana, and Anjaneya, and Sri Krishna with Rukmini and Satyabhama, alongside Malayappa Swamy and His consorts. The festival concludes with Snapana Tirumanjanam for all utsava murthies.

Seva Adjustments by TTD

During these three days, TTD has cancelled the following sevas:

  • Kalyanotsavam
  • Unjal Seva
  • Arjita Brahmotsavam
  • Sahasra Deepalankara Seva

Significance

The Vasanthotsavam is not just a ritual—it is a spiritual celebration of renewal, devotion, and the eternal bond between devotees and the divine. The aromatic baths, vibrant processions, and sacred chants create an atmosphere of bliss, marking the arrival of spring in the most divine way possible.
