Shattila Ekadashi 2026 – Significance, Rituals & Date
Shattila Ekadashi, also
known as Sattila Ekadashi or Tilda Ekadashi, is an important Ekadashi dedicated
to Lord Vishnu. It is observed during the waning phase of the moon
(Krishna Paksha) on the 11th lunar day in the Hindu month of Magh
(North India) or Paush (other regions). The festival usually falls in January.
The word “Sat-Tila”
comes from til, meaning sesame seeds. On this day, devotees
donate sesame seeds to the poor and needy. Bathing in water mixed with sesame
seeds is considered highly auspicious. Devotees also offer tarpanam
(oblations) to their ancestors using water mixed with sesame seeds.
Legend Behind Shattila
Ekadashi
According to legend, Lord
Krishna once appeared on Shattila Ekadashi disguised as a poor mendicant
wearing torn clothes and begged for food from a wealthy woman. She agreed to
give food only if he told his gotra. When the mendicant continued to ask
for food without doing so, she angrily placed a ball of clay in his
begging bowl. The mendicant blessed her and left.
Later, when the woman
went inside to eat, she was shocked to find that all the food had turned
into clay—fruits, rice, and vegetables alike. Despite her great wealth, she
could not get food anymore. Over time, she became weak and hungry.
Realizing her mistake,
she prayed sincerely to Lord Krishna. The Lord appeared in her dream and
explained that the greatest charity is Anna Daanam (feeding the hungry),
which she had failed to perform.
Significance of the Vrat
Lord Krishna advised her
to observe Shattila Ekadashi and donate sesame seeds to the poor. When
she followed his instructions and gave til to all who came to her door, her
food was restored to its original form. From then on, she kept her doors open
to anyone who was hungry.
Thus, Shattila Ekadashi
is observed to atone for sins, practice charity, and gain the blessings
of Lord Vishnu.
